Principal Message

Greetings, Cub Families -- Students and staff are getting into the groove of the instructional day! Our Cub Staff are collaborating to establish more efficient and effective systems/structures of support to ensure ALL kids are successful throughout the day. This means adults, as well as kids, are practicing new learning as we monitor our own progress towards school-wide goals. I’ll be sharing more about our School Improvement Plan (SIP) goals in the near future in preparation for our Admin Team’s presentation to the School Board on December 10th. Be sure to check-out the images below. It reflects just some of the ways we’re enriching kids’ middle school experience -- student leadership opportunities, community-partnerships, and participation in fine arts performance groups.

Speaking of fine arts… CKMS is honored to host our district’s annual Middle School Orchestra and Band Retreats in our high-tech Performing Arts Center (see image below). Big KUDOS to...
  • Mr. Logan -- for leading the coordination efforts for middle school orchestra and bands across the district!
  • Mr. Fox and Mr. Phillips -- for support with use of our CK Campus's Performing Arts Center (PAC)!
  • Orchestra/Band Parent volunteers -- for taking time out of their regular day to assist with supervising creative and talented teens!

This month, we have our first Spirit Week and after school social (see dates below). As a reminder, whenever we wear fun outfits and/or costumes for a Fall holiday or Spirit Week students must follow these expectations:
  • No masks
  • No fake blood / gore
  • No fake weapons

Parenting and teaching the middle school brain is a challenging job… we certainly get it! If you’re interested in developing your own parenting skills of shaping teen-behavior in positive ways that reduce the power-struggle, please consider registering for our district-provided workshop series “Parenting: The Love & Logic Way.” (see link under the Office section below). Middle school years are a unique season in the developing child, and it’s a great time to help kids grow OUT of aversive behaviors and IN to behaviors that will foster success well into high school and beyond!

Please mark your calendar for Fall Conference dates.
  • Oct. 22 -- evening “drop-in” for students and families; spend a few minutes with each of your student’s teachers for a quick touch-base.
  • Oct. 23-24 -- dates reserved for our instructional teams and counselors to meet with specific students and families, by appointment-only (parents will be contacted by staff; conference scheduling is determined by grade-level teams and based on academic needs, behavior and/or attendance)

Finally, thank YOU, for being our teaching and learning partners -- we are so very grateful for the ongoing support! Go, Cubs!!

Counseling

CKMS’s Anchored4Life Program started recently! Our amazing cubs learned which groups they are in and how they’ll be helping CKMS become an even more welcoming, amazing place! Students gathered in the commons for team assignments and training (see image below).

Meet one of our Therapy Dog friends, Lady! (see image below) Lady and her 4-legged friend, Jane, visited students during lunches to meet with kids who might need a little JOY-boost. These monthly visits to CKMS are part of a district program that partners with a community organization that connects therapy and crisis-response dogs with schools. When asked for feedback, one 6th grader replied, "This is one of the best days of school, ever!"

Library

We have a fabulous library collection of books. Students may check out up to 3 books at a time and may keep books for two weeks.

Automated overdue notices are sent to students every Thursday. Be sure to return books on time.

Reminder to 6th grade students with fines from elementary school-the fines remain on student accounts until fines are paid. Fines can be paid online or in person at the ASB window.

The CKMS Library also has many books to support CKSD’s Monthly Celebrations. This month we celebrate Disability History & Awareness Month. Students can select from a wide range of books to increase their knowledge, awareness, respect, and acceptance for people with disabilities.

“Approximately 2,300 of our students identify as students with disabilities and/or are supported under Section 504. Their diverse abilities, perspectives, and strengths are an important part of our school community. This month is an opportunity to increase awareness, respect, and acceptance for people with disabilities.”
~Jeremy Monroe, CKSD Assistant Superintendent for Student Achievement & Equity
